LAST month I competed in an inter-club Table Topics speech contest with Toastmasters. Table Topics involves making a short speech on a topic announced to you as you stand before the audience. The topic could be anything. It might be a pair of words such as “Coffee or Tea?”, which stimulated contestants at a previous comp to produce some highly entertaining impromptu oratory about their favourite beverage. Or the topic might be the beginning of a sentence which you are invited to finish and then expand on, as was the case last month.
