YOU can credit Anthony Albanese with persuading Geoff Dethlefs to stand. “That man's got to go and we've got to have somebody with some sense,” he says.

The Family First candidate for Monash is riled about a few things the Labor Party’s done but top of the list is the drive for renewable energy.

“They're chasing a mad dream when God gave us this beautiful coal to provide power cheaply. They want to get it from renewables which don't give it to us when we want it and the battery technology hasn't been developed.

“So it's just wasteful and it's our tax payer money that's being used and a trillion dollars of debt in the future. I’m fed up with the ineptitude of the Labor government to solve any problems with our cost of living crisis.”

Question time

WHEN we asked Post readers for the questions they would like to ask Monash election candidates, the floodgates opened. We received dozens of responses and almost 300 questions.

Special thanks to Blue Barlow who canvassed eight of her friends to come up with 42 questions covering the spectrum from housing, health and education to immigration, reconciliation and foreign policy.

We’ve been told we’re heading for a “cost of living election” but only one question referred to the cost of living, and only a small number related to local issues. Far from having our hands out shouting “More! More! More!” for Monash, Post readers seem far more interested in national events.

The questions give a real insight into our interests and concerns, with defence, climate change, energy and affordable housing topping the list of topics.

We can’t subject candidates to hundreds of questions, or they’d have no time for writing policies and kissing babies, so we’ve picked out the common threads. The Post will put a selection of questions to candidates during pre-election interviews.

Ask the candidates

THE Battle for Monash is shaping as one of the most intriguing of the 2025 federal election. After years of being a safe Liberal seat, Monash became marginal at the 2022 election with Liberal MP Russell Broadbent just surviving a national swing against the Liberal Party.

Adding to the interest this time, a new Liberal candidate has replaced the sitting MP, the sitting MP is standing as an Independent, another Teal-ish Independent is running a blistering campaign and the Labor candidate is keeping his powder dry.

The
Post election edition will include profiles of all the candidates, giving you the information you need to make an informed vote.

And you can help with some perceptive questions for candidates. Please forward questions to [email protected] and state whether they are general or directed to an individual candidate.
