The whip hand

CRACKING a whip outside Parliament House wasn’t on my bingo card at the start of 2026.
 
But, with an old stock whip from the Churchill Heritage Farm at Phillip Island, it was a light-hearted way to explain the role of a parliamentary whip in a video clip following my appointment as Deputy Opposition Whip. As someone who is passionate about promoting civics education in schools, I’m keen to engage younger constituents in a fun and interesting way about the work of the parliament.

AS WE approach the end of 2025, I want to thank Bass Coast Post readers for your engagement and feedback with me as your federal member. Over the last six months, my number one goal has been to do my best job for our community.

 
In Canberra, I have spoken up on a number of issues of national significance. These have stemmed from conversations with local residents in Monash. One example is the illegal tobacco trade. From only understanding some of the broader issues around it, within a few months I’ve immersed myself in all aspects of it because local residents approached me with real concern about the safety of our community.

WE RESIDE in one of Australia’s most beautiful regions, but there are a number of serious challenges the Bass Coast community is contending with right now. As I highlighted in my first speech to the Federal Parliament, our coastline is retreating, and our communities are being left to deal with the consequences.

​Erosion and inundation are not distant problems; they are happening now, in our region and in many coastal communities across Australia. That is why I have called for a nationally coordinated action plan on coastal erosion. Paths, beaches and infrastructure that locals have cherished for generations are being washed away while governments at every level remain slow to act.
