CINEFILES rejoice!  The Wonthaggi International Film Festival is on again this weekend. Following the fabulous refurbishment of the Wonthaggi Union Theatre, this is a welcome opportunity to indulge in a weekend of fantastic movies from around the world.

The festival kicks off tonight (Friday October 5) at 7.30pm with the Australian film The Legend of Ben Hall, followed by a Q&A with the director, Matthew Holmes, producer and cast of the film.  It’s a great opportunity to find out more about the making of the film and film-making in Australia today.

On Saturday and Sunday, the cinema will screen films from  France, Lebanon, Iceland, Japan and  Israel.

The Wonthaggi film festivals were the initiative of former Wonthaggi Cinema manager Keith Stevens. We are grateful to Keith for establishing a reputation for fine films in Wonthaggi. It was from those beginnings that the Bass Coast Fine Film Group started ten years ago and has gone from strength to strength.

Since Keith’s retirement two years ago, the Bass Coast Shire, under the direction of the recreation and culture co-ordinator Mark Lindsay, has taken over the running of the cinema and has been responsible for the programming of our fine films, film festivals and the holiday film program.  Mark has done a splendid job as he has overseen the development of the cinema within the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre, as well as the development of the centre itself.

Behind the scenes, the shire’s recreation and culture administration officer, Chris Wutzke,  has worked tirelessly, especially in the past two years, helping the Fine Film Group source and schedule films for our screenings and also organising the film festivals. Thank you, Chris, and we wish you the best in your retirement.

The full program, trailers and info on each film is available on the Bass Coast Fine Film Group website. Tickets at the box office. Opening night tickets $15. Saturday and Sunday: adults $15, seniors and BCFFG members $10.
