THE Bass Coast Chorale has been entertaining audiences from Bass Coast and South Gippsland for 18 years. During that time, we’ve presented many concerts on our own as well as joining forces for major works with other Gippsland choirs such as the South Gippsland Singers, the Prom Coast Singers and the West Gippsland Chorale. The profits from our concerts have contributed more than $28,000 to local charities.

Beyond the Clouds brings together a wide range of music: traditional, contemporary, classical, original, popular, opera and music from the shows.
The title is based on the fact that most of the items we will be singing refer to the clouds, the sky, flying, the solar system and the heavens: “I am flying …” “I look at clouds …” “Jupiter aligns with Mars …” “At the going down of the sun …” “A canopy of grey mist …” “this shining night of star-made shadows …” “to reach the unreachable stars …” “there is a castle on a cloud …”

Some of the music has been arranged specifically for the Bass Coast Chorale. In this concert we’ll also be singing two of my original choral works: “Furneaux’s Land”, set to a poem by J. Lort Stokes depicting George Bass’s first sighting of Wilsons Promontory, and “For the Fallen”, set to the poem by Laurence Binyon which incorporates what has become known as the Anzac Ode.

The program includes music by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, G. Handel, G. Verdi, A. Vivaldi and an inspirational medley of songs from Les Miserables.

“Beyond the Clouds” is a one-off performance. Admission is $15, which includes afternoon tea. Admission for children is free. Tickets are available at the door or call 0402 727 364 for pre-sales.

Larry Hills has been musical director of the Bass Coast Chorale since it started.
