The evening features past recipients of Bass Coast Community Foundation performance awards, which offer talented young performers an opportunity to develop their talents with the aim of them taking up a professional career in their chosen field.
The gala night will also raise funds for the 2018 Awards and the foundation’s other community activities.
This performance will be an opportunity to see and hear about the work of recipients, including:
Foundation Board member Kirk Skinner, who co-ordinates the performance awards, says these young people demonstrate that talent, plus hard work and commitment, can lead to a rewarding career, with the support of family, teachers and the wider community.
For those who might be contemplating a professional performance career, the 2018 awards will be open for applications in mid-September 2017.
Applicants should be senior secondary school students, resident in Bass Coast Shire, who are outstanding performers in any performance discipline including music (vocal or instrumental), dance or drama. They need to demonstrate a willingness and capacity to develop a career in this discipline.
Kirk Skinner says the awards help to level the playing field for young performers in Bass Coast.
“We all know that talented locals can develop professional artistic careers – I’m proof of that myself – but we also know that coming from a regional area where there are fewer opportunities makes it harder. The performance awards can make a difference by providing that bit of extra funding that might open up an opportunity they might otherwise miss out on.”
The Bass Coast Gala Performance is at the Wonthaggi Union Theatre at 7pm on Wednesday, September 6. Tickets are $45 or $22 for full-time students. Book at https://www.trybooking.com/301774

- Anthony Foon – trumpet. Currently studying, working and playing in Melbourne, Anthony maintains his local connections through regular rehearsals and performances with the Wonthaggi Citizens’ Band.
- Hannah McKittrick – vocalist. A student at the Victorian College of the Arts, Hannah has just launched a performance project, Hoi Polloi, that is performing live at various venues in the inner northern suburbs.
- Josh Hooke – piano. Josh is continuing post-graduate studies in music, and is developing quite a local following as a regular performer in recitals at the Wonthaggi Baptist Church.
- Xavier Pellin – ballet. Xavier is about to take up a position with the Louisville Ballet in the US under the direction of the former principal dancer at the Australian Ballet, Robert Curran. While Xavier won’t be in the theatre on the night, we will be hearing from him as he wanted to thank the Bass Coast community for their support and encouragement.
- The Newhaven College Boys Vocal Group. About to launch their first CD, and fresh from performing in front of 2000 people at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane, the Group is the signature Choral ensemble foe Newhaven College.
- Jake Amy – piano. Jake is a multi-award-winning performer who draws inspiration from both the classical and jazz realms. A performing commitment means Jake won’t be performing, but he will have a message for the audience.
