The sound of a wish

The Bass Coast Chorale's mid-year concert marks the winter solstice.
By Larry Hills

THE title of the Bass Coast Chorale’s mid-year concert this year comes from a song in the soundtrack of the film The Diary of Anne Frank, which I've arranged for the chorale.

“If, at the sound of a wish,
The summer sun would shine and
If just a smile would do
To brush all the clouds from the sky.”

Maybe the choir’s wish is fitting for the concert on our shortest day of the year!

Our chorale has been entertaining audiences from the Bass Coast and South Gippsland for 19 years. During that time, we have presented many concerts on our own as well as joining forces for major works with other Gippsland choirs. The profits from our concerts go to local charities.

IF … brings together a wide range of music: traditional, contemporary, classical, original, popular, and music from the shows. Included in the program is music of Stephen Sondheim, Sting, Haydn, Karl Jenkins, Beethoven and also a handful of traditional Australian and international folk songs. There is something for everyone.

We’ll be performing my own composition “Aegean Shores” from “They Went With Songs.” It is set to the poem, “Guns at Sea,” by Imtarfa, depicting the thoughts of the troopers heading to Anzac cove in 1915.

There are also works arranged by chorale member Martin Cox, who will be accompanying two of the songs on his oboe.

IF… is in The Shed at the State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi on Saturday, June 22 at 2pm. Admission is $20 for adults, including afternoon tea. Free admission for children. Buy your tickets from members of the Bass Coast Chorale or at the door.

Larry Hills has been musical director of the Bass Coast Chorale since it began in 2005.
