Where words grow wild

PicturePoet Kathy Wiltshire finds her voice on stage.
By Kathy Wiltshire

LAST September, I set a goal for creating a place where I could share my poetry and share the spotlight with others, without having to drive hours to get there.  I stepped onto the stage at Archies Creek Hotel as host and began the ‘Wild Words’ poetry and spoken word nights.

I consider myself a quietly spoken person, but when on the stage I have the courage to release ideas and emotions that are too complex to say in conversation.

Everybody’s experience is unique. I get the audience involved too, inviting them to choose a favourite poem or poet.

My appreciation of poetry grows as I meet people. I see how one person can adore a piece that another finds distasteful, shaped by the experiences we each bring.

In a world of highs and lows, strangers thanked me for holding the event in our community.

With three events now held, I can say that each event was a success, even when forecast wild winds threatened to interfere with the event.  Words shared were funny, tragic and breath taking and celebrated with cheers from the audience. Each event is a new adventure.

The next event will be held Wednesday January 28, starting at 7pm. All welcome.

A poem inspired by a long flight to Canada.

Humans in flight

By Kathy Wiltshire

Ready for lift off
Packed in like sardines
Roar, rumble and woosh
In a tin can with wings

Long distance flight
Wiggle and squirm upright
I long to be sleeping
I'm not an owl in the night

Like a bear seeking salmon
I'm anticipating food
My claws rip open the box
To lighten my mood

I'm not even hungry
Just want a distraction
In flight magazine
Not to my satisfaction

Human migration
In a man made metal nest
Packed together
And seldom rest

Long decent touch down
Humans reconnect with the land
A strange form of flight
Geese will never understand

What an uplifting story, thank you Kathy. And how inspiring to see the quiet courage and dedication of one special person to create these poetry get togethers to share each others thoughts through the magic and power of words. 👏👏

Wild Words sounds great! Congrats on creating a welcoming space for spoken word. I’ll be there!
