Sustainability series

You may have seen the Al Habra Family on the Back Roads Series on the ABC a while back and how refreshing that was to see a happy story for a refugee family. Well they have been here in our community for 12 months now and happily ensconced in their new life.
The Bass Coast Refugee Sponsorship Group are now giving a warm welcome to the Darwesh and Rezai families. To share our hospitality we are well known for we are holding a celebration come welcome at Mitchell House on Sunday 24th November from 2pm and in true Australian style, please bring a plate (with food on it, we don’t want any confusion on this score.) We are looking forward to you all coming to meet our new families and celebrate our oldies’ year of inclusion in our welcoming community.
Whether one is a refugee settling into a new cultural environment or being part of a culturally diverse section of our community, it is very important to have those friendship and support connections which buoy our spirits and give us meaning and purpose. Well our Multicultural Women’s Group can provide avenues for this.
They meet on Thursdays 10am to 12 noon. It is for support for those who are socially and culturally isolated and culturally and linguistically diverse. Providing, among other things an improved awareness of cultural mores and expectations and provide opportunities for the development of practical life skills.
We can all struggle with our health or just how we are from time to time in our lives. For some it is a time with a beginning and an end. For others it has a beginning but no end and care and compassion from others can go some way to support them. Some disabilities can hold people back and for others it may be that their disability can take them in surprising and interesting directions. Each person has their unique journey. Bearing that in mind we are celebrating International Day of Disability on Tuesday the 3rd of December, 11am to 1pm with a free bbq and free games and activities. Come along one and all for a lovely day at Mitchell House on Murray Street.
The New Wave Gippsland Bass Coast is a self advocacy group that is run by and for people with an intellectual disability and acquired brain injury living in the Bass Coast Area. The group works together to ensure that everyone has the same rights, choices and opportunities as everyone else in the community. They meet every second Thursday from 10 to 11.30pm. The next one is Thursday December 12th. Call the New Wave Gippsland Bass Coast peer worker Peter Drew on 0439 425 238. Or contact the WNC for further contact information.
It is not always easy to make positive moves in our lives. Sometimes we need help. The AA Support groups meet on Wednesdays 7 to 8pm and Saturdays 11am to 12.30pm. A good fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other to help solve their common problem and help others achieve sobriety. Call Sean on 0425 707 480 for Wednesdays and Steve on 0431 700 085 for Saturdays.
Al-Anon helps family and friends of alcoholics to recover from the effects of living with a person whose drinking is a problem. Now they meet on Fridays 10.30am to 12noon. Call Karen on 0409 354 038
A Narcotics Anonymous group is also available. Help could come in sharing experiences with narcotic addiction within a supportive group. They meet on Mondays 7 to 8pm. Call Peter on 0456 000 844 for more information.
Every month we have lots going on at the WNC, so consider becoming a member of the WNC and get discounts to many of our activities and receive a quarterly newsletter called Connections plus The Grapevine program which lists groups, their dates, days and times for the term. Both can be delivered online or by post, your choice. Call Mitchell House or visit us on Facebook: Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre at Mitchell House. Or go to our website:
