The New Wave Gippsland Bass Coast is a self advocacy group that is run by and for people with an intellectual disability and acquired brain injury living in the Bass Coast Area. The group works together to ensure that everyone has the same rights, choices and opportunities as everyone else in the community. They meet every second Thursday from 10 to 11.30pm. So next month it’s on Thursday July 12th. Call the New Wave Gippsland Bass Coast peer worker Peter Drew on 0439 425 238. Or contact the WNC for further contact information.
As a tenant you have rights. Has your rent gone up without notice? Are your repairs not being done are there delays in getting your bond returned? Then you can book a Renters’ Rights time with a qualified lawyer from Gippsland Community Legal Service to get free and confidential advice. Make an appointment by phone. This service is available on the second Thursday of the month, so it’s also coming up next month on Thursday 11th July from 3 to 4pm.
Every 2nd Friday of the month, from 1 to 2.30pm the Bass Coast Parkinson’s Support Group meet for those and their families dealing with this disabling condition. Parkinson’s is a neurological disorder with a complex range of symptoms unique to each individual. Living with Parkinson’s can be extremely isolating and challenging for both individuals and their families. While the Parkinson’s journey is a deeply personal experience, it doesn’t have to undertaken alone. To enrol contact Fight Parkinson’s Vic. On 1800 644 189. They have a speaker each meeting and the group meet next month on Friday 12th July.
June’s Fixit Café is on tomorrow and while that is too late to book in your item for then, you are well ahead of the game to book in for July. It will be on Sunday 21st July, 10am - 12noon. (It’s on every 3rd Sunday of the month.) The Men’s Shed provide a wonderful service in all sorts of fixit skills such as sharpening tools, knives and garden equipment as well as assessing furniture items for repair and have returned many loved items back to their owners for a new lease on life. There are electrical fixers and a sewing/mending circle as well. Perhaps Graeme the clock fixer will be available. However, as it is one item per person, which you can carry, with any replacement parts that are needed, that huge grandfather clock is out. To book in ring the WNC at Mitchell House. There is also the offer of a hot cuppa and cake. A money donation would be gratefully received to help with the running of the café. If you would like to volunteer your services you are most welcome. Contact through the Facebook page for WMS Fixit Café or leave your details with Mitchell House.
Are you aware of the power of meditation and mindfulness? They can do wonderful things for your health. Belief is an important component to optimise the beneficial results. If you do, then that’s great. If you are wondering and perhaps hesitant, then take yourself by the hand and come on in and give it a try. There are many who would testify to their efficacy. We have four groups which provide these opportunities.
Firstly on Mondays 1 - 2pm there is the Monday Meditation Group. A place where you can start your week, looking for some quiet time, to let go ‘noise’ or just relax. Bring a floor mat or you may choose to do it sitting on a chair, whichever is most comfortable.
Then there is Yoga with Linda, on Tuesdays 10.30 to 11.45am. Linda has extensive training in yoga as well as relaxation and meditation.
On Wednesdays, 3.30 to 4.15pm, there is Mindfulness with Maree, where she provides an opportunity for participants to learn and practice different mindfulness and breathing techniques that will enhance relaxation and inner peace.
Maree is back again on Thursdays 2 to 3pm providing seated yoga, suitable for all abilities. You can stand using the chair for support or remain seated. Improve your flexibility, movement, concentration and strength. You are most welcome to come along and give the classes a try to determine if the practices will be of benefit to you.
We have lots going on at the WNC over the months so consider becoming a member of the WNC and get discounts to many of our activities and receive a monthly newsletter plus The Grapevine program which lists groups, their dates, days and times for the term. Both can be delivered online or by post, your choice. Call Mitchell House or visit us on Facebook: Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre at Mitchell House. Or go to our website:
