In for the kill

Bird photographers travel thousands of kilometres to get the perfect shot but sometimes it's much closer to home.

Pauline Wilkinson was driving from Dalyston to Wonthaggi when she noticed a juvenile black shouldered kite (Elanus notatus) on a fence post. With a new camera and a long lens in the car, she stopped for a closer look

So engrossed was the bird in its catch (a rodent) that, after briefly checking out the newcomer, it went straight back to its feast.

“How lucky I felt to capture a rare photo opportunity,” Pauline says.

Out of the blue

These little guys turned up out of the blue last weekend and entertained us for about two hours. The male superb blue wren brought his two female friends to show us how clever he was.

Backyard birds

These are just some of the birds that come to visit us. We believe they are attracted to our garden because of the variety of native shrubs and trees that we have birdscaped. Plant and they will come. I have also observed that the rest of our neighbourhood have Indian mynas in their gardens and we don't largely because the fantastic honeyeaters drive them away.

Tricks of the family trade

Wonthaggi photographer Pauline Wilinson had a field day last Sunday when a family of willy wagtails spent the day doing aerial acrobatics at her place.

“We've always had a willy wagtail around but we've never had a family before so it was great to have them arrive with the young one.

“They spent the whole day at our place rearing and feeding the fledgling, which provided us with great entertainment.”
