Bass Coast Artists’ Society
The Bass Coast Artists’ Society (originally the Wonthaggi Art Group) has been operating for more than 45 years. The society, with more than 160 members, operates from a modern art centre in the former railway goods shed, which also houses a members’ gallery. On Mondays and Wednesdays members are encouraged to drop in and do their own thing. On Tuesdays there are two life drawing sessions, day time and evening, with a live model. Also regular workshops by top artists, a monthly photography group and regular bus trips to external galleries. Bass Coast Fine Film Group
The Bass Coast Fine Film Group was set up to encourage interest in film as an art form and a medium of information and education. There is also a chance to talk over the films with other film buffs with drinks and nibbles in the foyer after screenings. Membership is $60 a year, which grants admission to all the group’s films and a concession for the annual Wonthaggi International Film Festival. Films screen in the Wonthaggi Cinema at 10.45am on Sundays every five to six weeks. Kongor School Support Group
A group of local people came together to help rebuild the primary school in the war-torn South Sudanese village of Kongor. Our goal broadened after we bought a brick-making machine and formed a partnership with a charity called Door of Hope Australia. The plan is to teach the Kongor people to use the machine to make bricks for the school and eventually to rebuild their village. Our group needs to raise enough money to buy and transport tools and materials (10 truckloads of suitable soil, three truckloads of sand, 500 bags of cement, fuel for the machine). We sell gift cards and are always looking for new fund-raising ideas and people to help with fund-raisers. Donations are tax-deductible. Wonthaggi Wargamers
