THE Australian Labor Party has selected Kilcunda resident Tully Fletcher, a director at Deloitte Australia, as the federal Labor candidate for Monash.

A third generation Gippslander, Mr Fletcher grew up in Wonthaggi and stood as the Greens candidate for Bass in the 2006 Victorian election.

He was senior adviser to the Victorian Attorney-General from 2014-2019 and earlier worked as executive officer to the Chancellor of the Australian National University, former federal minister Gareth Evans.

The selection adds to an intriguing contest for Monash, with two high-profile independent candidates, including current MP Russell Broadbent.

Candidates so far

Liberal Party - Mary Aldred
Labor Party – Tully Fletcher
Independent – Russell Broadbent
Independent – Deb Leonard
Greens – Terence Steele
National Party – to be announced

A former Liberal stronghold, the seat became marginal at the 2022 election when the ALP's Jessica O’Donnell came within 2.9 per cent of knocking off Mr Broadbent.

A long-time Liberal MP, Mr Broadbent resigned from the party after members selected Mary Aldred in November 2023.

His defection opens the door for the National Party to contest the seat for the first time in many years. It has selected a candidate but is yet to announce them.

The Greens Party has selected Terence Steele, a semi-retired teacher from Kardella South with family ties to the engineering and railway industries of South Gippsland.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has yet to announce an election date. He must give at least 33 days’ notice and it must take place on or before May 17.

We are currently visiting the beautiful city of Canberra and today we spent some time in the portrait gallery. I discussed with the gallery staff the beautiful portrait of former High Court Justice Michael Kirby. I also discussed the fact that we have constitutionally enshrined mandatory retirement of high court judges at 70 years of age. Michael was very disappointed with this rule because he has far more to contribute.
The constitution said he had to go so he did.
I believe that this rule should apply to all politicians. Russell Broadbent is 74 years of age and therefore should retire.
I am very pleased that we have a great selection of younger people with strong credentials to vote for.
