A variety of volunteer roles need to be filled as winter shelter prepares to open.

AS THE colder months approach, the Bass Coast Winter Shelter is preparing to open its doors and is seeking dedicated volunteers to support people experiencing homelessness in our region.

Run by the Interchurch Council of Phillip Island, the shelter will provide a warm meal, safe dormitory-style accommodation and, most importantly, a place of compassion, connection and care.

Set to operate across June, July and August this year, the shelter will offer up to three nights of accommodation each week in Cowes, thanks to the generosity of local churches opening their doors.
PictureThe Bass Coast Winter Shelter is a project of the Interchurch Council of Phillip Island. Wendy Elson, Uniting Church and Project Co-Ordinator, left, Albert Depares, Catholic Church/St Vincent de Paul; and Lynore Mercer, Uniting Church and committee member.
Project coordinator Wendy Elson says volunteers are at the heart of the Bass Coast Winter Shelter.

“The volunteers offer more than just shelter, they provide dignity, warmth and a sense of belonging. It’s about giving hope and community during the hardest time of the year."

Volunteers are needed to help with essential preparation and behind-the-scenes roles, including:
  • Volunteer Coordinators
  • Administration Support
  • Accounts
  • Training Support

When the shelter becomes operational, further support will be needed throughout June, July and August. Winter volunteer roles include:
  • Minibus Driver
  • Trailer Driver

General volunteers are needed for three key shifts:
  • Evening (5.30-10pm): Set up, welcome guests, serve dinner, socialise and clean up.
  • Overnight (10pm - 6am): Ensure a safe, calm environment; stay awake through the night with another volunteer; and support guests as needed.
  • Breakfast (6-9am): Prepare breakfast, interact with guests, clean and pack up the trailer.
If you can help please email [email protected] or ring Wendy Elson on 0492 859 637.
