The two choirs will rehearse together on Sunday morning under the direction of the Melbourne choir’s founding artistic director, the ebullient Dr Jonathon Welch, who founded the Choir of Hard Knocks and Sydney Street Choir.
Bass Coast Chorale artistic director Larry Hills says Dr Welch came to Wonthaggi in 2016 and ran a workshop for any local singers who wanted to join in.
“There were 120 of us plus his choir. There was a lot of fun and laughter, with friendships made through the music.”
He said the local singers enjoyed working with Dr Welch, who puts them through vocal exercises and other warm-ups. “He’s one of the best choral practitioners in the country.”
“Jonathon was rapt in this area and keen to return.”
The local singers have been practising two works, “Hand in hand” and “You’re the Voice”, in preparation. The two choirs will rehearse together on Sunday morning and perform in the afternoon.
Dr Welch said his choir was looking forward to returning to Bass Coast. “These concerts are about the music, our joy in singing and performing but also about community and connections.”
In April next year Dr Welch will lead a weekend workshop in Wonthaggi for five regional chorale groups: the Bass Coast Chorale, the South Gippsland Singers, the Prom Coast Singers, the West Gippsland Chorale and a Berwick choir.
THECHO!R and the Bass Coast Chorale perform at St Joseph’s Parish School Hall, Korumburra Road, Wonthaggi.at 2pm on Sunday July 29. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the door.
