THE countdown has started for Gippsland musicians to record and upload their songs for the chance to win a paid gig in a gala concert.
Gippsland Live will be held via Facebook and culminate in three prize winners performing at the 2021 Esso Night under the Stars early next year.
The competition is organised by Theatre Gippsland, representing five performing arts centres across Gippsland: the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre, The Wedge in Sale, West Gippsland Arts Centre in Warragul, Latrobe Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon and The Forge Theatre in Bairnsdale.
The first step is for Gippsland musicians to make and submit a video of themselves performing an original song. (For the purposes of the competition, a “Gippslander” is defined as anyone living in Gippsland or who grew up in the region.)

There are two voting streams: one is a public vote on Facebook and the second is by peer judges.
Entries close on Thursday May 21. Videos will be uploaded to Theatre Gippsland Facebook page between May 19 and June 2 and voting for both the public and peer votes is open from June 4-11.
At the end of round one, three musicians from the judges’ vote and seven from the public will make up the top 10 for round two. It will follow the same process as round one and culminate in the final three winners, one from the judges’ votes and two from the public vote.
All three winners will be offered a paid set at Esso Night under the Stars 2021 where they will share the stage with a headline artist.
The inaugural Esso Night Under the Stars was held last year. The second event has been pushed back to early 2021 due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
The competition is being run by Wellington Shire Council in conjunction with Theatre Gippsland and sponsored by ExxonMobil. ExxonMobil Australia chairman Nathan Fay said the company hoped the competition would provide some virtual entertainment for the Gippsland community while social interactions were restricted.
Wellington Mayor Alan Hall said the competition was an opportunity for Wellington and Esso to work with the Theatre Gippsland network of five performing arts venues across Gippsland to bring Gippslanders together at a difficult time.
The Gippsland Live competition will be run through the Theatre Gippsland Facebook page at www.facebook.com/theatregippsland and will also be seen on the Facebook pages for five venues. To see all the entries, follow Theatre Gippsland, The Wedge, West Gippsland Arts Centre, The Forge Theatre and Arts Hub, Latrobe Performing Arts and the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre on Facebook.
