ENSEMBLE Goya will make their debut on Philip Island this weekend with a concert at the Cowes Cultural Centre.

The group comprises three experienced and internationally seasoned musicians: Alexander Waite on piano, Marisa Hatibi on violin and Belinda Bolger on clarinet.

Saturday evening’s program features three works:
  • Presented by Waite, Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 21 in C major, Op.53, known as the Waldstein, is one of the most popular and technically demanding of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas. The great passion and depth of the piece mark a transition in Beethoven's career from early composer to a great master of his craft.
  • Homage a M. De Falla by Bella Kovac for clarinet utilises the Flamenco harmonies and rhythms of its namesake Manuel De Falla. This is a bright colourful work in which Kovac showcases a flamboyant rhapsodic romp through a delightfully Spanish flavoured affair.
  • Bartok's Contrasts for Clarinet Violin and Piano is a mesmerising work. A deep exploration of the instruments, tonal colourings and rhythms, this 20th century gem is a deeply intriguing exploration of Bartok’s unique style. It is his only chamber work to include a wind instrument.

The concert starts at 5pm on Saturday. Tickets are on sale at the door.
