Fifth time lucky for the Gondoliers

WATERLINE residents and other Gilbert & Sullivan fans will be crossing everything that a long-awaited performance of The Gondoliers will finally go ahead in late January.

The Corinella performance by Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria (GSOV) was first planned (in pre-Covid days) for June 2020 but cancelled in March when restrictions began. In January this year, it was reprogrammed for July 10 … then for September 18 … then November 20.
And then the organisers - Bass Valley Music Festival - got a note from GSOV:

“The committee of regrets that as the company is unable to give a performance of the company’s usual standard on 20 November that there will be a further delay to our merriment! Covid restrictions on rehearsals meant singers would have to rehearse in masks unable to fully open their mouths and the entire ensemble could not sing and dance in the one room. Instead, we look forward to coming to you in summer – masks off and voices out – on 29 January.”

Now, with rehearsals under their belts, says Jean Coffey, of Bass Valley Music Festival, it’s back to planning a great night out for Waterline and other residents.

“Fingers crossed we go ahead this time!” she said.

The Gondoliers is one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s sunniest and funniest operas.  Set in Venice, and a balmy isle in the Mediterranean, it’s based on the age-old story of babies mixed up at birth, set to “the happiest music ever written by an Englishman”. Cachucha, fandango, bolero, Sullivan was truly inspired to write such delicious Italian and Spanish melodies.

And Gilbert’s satire of Republicanism is still as fresh today as ever: “When everyone is somebody then no one’s anybody”.

Founded in 1935, Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria is one of Australia’s oldest continuously operating arts groups.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers, Corinella Public Hall, 7pm, Saturday January 29. Book at https://www.trybooking.com/BVGOP  Proof of double vaccination is required for entry.
