SERENADE at Sunset, the iconic light opera and musical theatre event, is back for 2017 after a one-year hiatus. Those who attended in 2015 will remember the many highlights – especially the finale when the full cast was singing One Day More in time to nature’s lightning and thunder. How did we ever arrange that at the right time?

After much hard work during 2015, the Bass Valley Music Festival Committee had to make the very difficult decision to cancel the 2016 show due to lack of funds. The cost of contracting professional artists and sound technicians is high but vital to maintain the level of production needed to attract and retain audiences. The committee is committed to delivering an affordable and high-quality performance and so it was with heavy heart that it decided to suspend the 2016 performance rather than produce one of lesser quality.
Performances until then had been received with high acclaim by audiences starved of this form of quality music; indeed it had become a highlight in the region’s calendar with audience evaluations showing the importance of this show to the region. Serenade at Sunset is a performance that would otherwise not be available to many people due to cost and location. Bass Valley Music Festival subsidises ticket costs to ensure they remain affordable and has made its home at the Grantville Recreation Reserve as the most central and accessible location.
But now we are back, thanks to sponsorship from the Bendigo Community Bank, a grant from Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal – Gardiner Dairying Foundation, the ongoing support of the Bass Coast Shire, and the continued support by our loyal community sponsors,
Serenade will once again bring a host of stars to the Waterline area. While the program lineup is still being finalised, we can tell you we have once again secured David Rogers-Smith (who will ever forget his Nessun Dorma in 2015), ably supported by Josh Piterman (West Side Story, Ten Tenors), Jemma Rix (Wicked) and others still to be confirmed.
Local support acts and ‘Rising Stars’ will again feature, including Jake Amy and the Groove Hunters and Newhaven Boys Vocal Group. There will also be a surprise appearance from a local identity who is a household name in the entertainment industry.
Local food and wine vendors will again be on site to keep the audience fed and watered.
Bass Valley Music Festival Inc. is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers. Any profit from the production is used first to assist young music students from the area in their careers, with any surplus being invested back into producing the show the following year. Serenade further supports the local area by encouraging visitors from the city and beyond and by providing local food and wine vendors with a promotional opportunity.
