The art of isolation

I AM an artist living in Coronet Bay. On March 21, as the nation was about to go into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I founded an art group called The Isolated Penguins.

I invited artists and friends to start making art in response to the experience of what Australia was facing in 2020. Issues like bushfires, floods, climate change and COVID 19.  I set the group up to network and display our art through the social media platforms of Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

It’s grown slowly, and Facebook has become the main point of focus. At this point we have over 209 followers on Facebook with around 20 participating artists Australia wide, including five from Bass Coast: Phillip Islanders Lynda Horsborough, Ajanta Judd and Jane Elliston, and Steve Ambry and myself, who both live in Coronet Bay.

What the artists have produced is based on personal experiences in isolation, environmental impacts, personal spiritual growth, current affairs and political commentary.

Last weekend about 10 of the artists planned a front of house exhibition called Our Art Our Isolation. We set up our art around front yards, studios, etc. and documented it with video and photography to display on our social media platforms.

While the current focus is on the COVID-19 pandemic, the intention is to keep making art in the aftermath of this isolation. We are planning art exhibitions, book publications once the isolation is over.

To see more of our art, visit https://theisolatedpenguins.net. Through that you can link to our Facebook page, Instagram and YouTube
