PHILLIP Island artist Marian Quigley called her portrait of Anne Davie “The Custodian” in recognition of Anne’s long custodial role within the Phillip Island community.
Last week the portrait was selected as a finalist in the Portia Geach Memorial Art Award in Sydney.
Marian, who is the president of the Phillip island Artists Society, said she had known her “subject” for more than 30 years and admired her outstanding contributions to the local community in environmental, cultural and social welfare causes.
“Anne was a model for one of ASPI's monthly portrait sessions – which proved very convenient!
The painting features two historical emblems of Anne’s custodianship – the Cowes Jetty Shed and the Thompson Avenue cypress trees.
Marian said she attempted to capture the subject’s “wisdom, determination and drive as well as her significant custodial role within the Phillip Island community.”
Australia’s most prestigious art prize for portraiture by women artists, the Portia Geach award was established by the will of the late Florence Kate Geach in memory of her sister, Portia Geach.
The non-acquisitive award of $30,000 is awarded by the Trustee for the entry which is of the highest artistic merit, “… for the best portrait painted from life of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters, or the Sciences”.
Anne and Marian will attend the opening of the exhibition in Sydney on October 19.
