IT IS 9am on 23 June, 2022. I have just re-read Bass Coast Post editor Catherine Watson’s essay “Post mortem” from last week’s edition, and all the beautiful comments.  The article is another real gem from Catherine!

It is hard to believe that it is 10 years since Catherine clicked on “publish” and sent the first basscoastpost.com out to the online world.
Because I may not make the celebration on Sunday, I am writing this short essay for edition number 327, or just as a message to Catherine, in appreciation for the Bass Coast Post. I will endeavour to follow Catherine’s basic rule for contributors: “try not to be boring”.

So here is a simple but heartfelt acrostic from me to you, Catherine, and all of your contributors. This is my list of a reason for every year of your little online magazine’s existence – 10 reasons I admire Catherine Watson, editor extraordinaire, and all the other writers and artists who have woven in and out of the Bass Coast Post journey over the first 10 years. And also why we love the Bass Coast Post (yes Catherine, really):

Always interesting
Debate is civilised
Mentors locals who never realised they could be writers
Ideas and information abound in each edition
Range of topics is wonderfully broad
Art by local artists featured
Tells it like it is
Includes winning entries from Bass Coast Prize for Non-Fiction
Occupies a unique space in Bass Coast
Nobody could have done it better!

Congratulations Catherine. And even if you do find that bright young thing to take over, we will all be looking forward to your contributions, dreamt up as you float on your lilo down the Powlett!

Hear, hear, Christine.
Don't worry - I have never read anything of yours which wasn't fascinating, never mind interesting! I've learned so much from you,
especially about the Island and the history of our area. Thank you,
for your contributions and thanks to Catherine for publishing your work.
