PictureJosh Latham: “Someone with a disability can be the best worker you have.”
By Geoff Ellis

JOSH Latham has plenty of reasons to get out of bed early these days. Now he’s inviting business leaders to join him for breakfast.

Headlined “Diverse- ability”, an early morning event at Wonthaggi Golf Club will showcase the great opportunities that arise through employment of people of all abilities.

Beau Vernon is the keynote speaker and a panel of experts will discuss the positive results when barriers to employment are removed. The statistics point to reduced absenteeism and increased productivity. Other benefits, such as loyalty and dedication, are beyond measure.

To illustrate the key messages of this breakfast, Maxima Joblink has asked Drift Media to produce a video to showcase Josh’s busy workday.

Josh started his dream job as a marketing officer at Bass Coast Adult Learning (BCAL) early last year. It’s a fast-paced role which includes media work and graphic design.

As a person with autism, Josh brought a fresh perspective to BCAL.

“Here's something I can tell you that you might not know - people with a disability can be the best worker you have.

“You can work with agencies to find the right person then work with them to remove any barriers to productivity. It's easy. You need to get to know them. The more you know about that person, your worker, the easier it gets.”

Josh believes that employers can tap into a fresh pool of talent – and perhaps a different way of thinking – during these tough Covid times when many businesses are struggling with staff shortages related to furloughs and self-isolation.

Josh’s advice to jobseekers is to aim high. “Train for the next step. Don’t lose sight of your dream job; it’s out there somewhere.”

Josh’s dad, Tony Latham, says “Since Josh started at BCAL he doesn’t hang around the house. He’s much more motivated. A bit of money in his pocket helps too. He’s independent”

Equal opportunity for advancement and job satisfaction are universal human rights. As Dylan Alcott (Australian of the Year) said on Australia Day: “Guess what? We're not just ready to work, we're ready to take your jobs, all right? We are coming. We are coming.”

The Diverse-Ability Breakfast will be held at the Wonthaggi Golf  Club from 7am on Friday February 25.

Book your seat at Trybooking. Inquiries: contact Josh on 0403 717 46 or visit the BCAL website.

Nothing short of brilliant! Josh, you are an inspiration. Your work ethic, willingness to learn and 'all-in' approach has seen you set and achieve your goals. I'll never forget the day you told me you landed the marketing job at BCAL. I was blown away. You truly live the saying of "Dream, Believe, Achieve". Congratulations on your continuing success at BCAL and all the very best for your Business Breakfast.
