Acting chiefs take turns

PictureActing CEOs: Jodi Kennedy, Greg Box and James Stirton
THREE senior council staff will get a chance to show their leadership style until a new permanent replacement is chosen for the current Chief Executive Officer Ali Wastie.

The council announced yesterday that the role of interim CEO would be shared by:
  • Greg Box – General Manager Partnerships, Economy and Culture,
  • James Stirton – General Manager Placemaking
  • Jodi Kennedy – General Manager Resilient Communities
with each taking the role for eight weeks.

Bass Coast Mayor Michael Whelan said all three acting CEOs have more than 15 years’ local government and leadership experience. “Council is fortunate to have highly capable leaders within the organisation to ensure a steady transition.”

Ms Wastie resigned last month to take up the position of CEO at the City of Greater Geelong.
She told the Post the council had great depth in its leadership team. “When I step aside, any of my general managers can quite happily and ably handle that role. It’s not an issue.”

Ms Wastie said there was likely to be a very strong field of applicants for the permanent role, internal and external. “When we advertise for senior roles we are inundated with quality applicants.”

Ms Wastie finishes at Bass Coast on July 28, after four and a half years in the role. A recruitment agency will soon begin a formal process to determine a short list for her replacement before the end of the year.

Is it really necessary to resort to big city head hunters for next CEO? Surely we don’t want yet another disengaged, long commuting foreigner?

Bernie,
I worked closely with Ms Wastie and Mr Buckley and your offensive, ill informed description does not apply to either of them. Bass Coast deserves the best and due diligence needs to be applied to the process. Its 2023, not 2013.

Sorry Geoff, my previous based on conversation with Don Cummins from Mansfield de-amalgamation. Previously expensive decisions made in far away and very different community of Benalla. Subsequently less indulgent salaries, not so extravagant building projects, real community presence. In COWES, slab sided petrochemical foam boxes, Cultural and PIAL, Smugliness BCSC.

Thanks Bernie,
So comments meant for Benalla Express? "Less indulgent salaries"? Sounds like 'work choices' which we voted out in 2007. I think we need to dream big and look upwards. How's Groundswell going these days> Cheers Comrade,
