PictureBass Coast Mayor Clare Le Serve with the new council CEO Greg Box
AFTER five months of looking, 25 applications and an exhaustive interview process, Bass Coast councillors have chosen one of our own as the new council CEO.

Greg Box has worked at Bass Coast Shire for close to three years, following almost 30 years of local government leadership experience at Yarra Ranges Council and the City of Greater Dandenong.

He is currently the council’s general manager of partnerships, economy and culture but when he returns from leave at the end of January he will step into the top role.

He replaces former Ali Wastie who left Bass Coast in July to take the role of CEO at the City of Greater Geelong.

External executive recruitment firm Davidson led the process to replace her.

Mr Box joined Bass Coast Shire Council in 2020. His most recent areas of responsibility have been communications, advocacy and engagement, economic development, customer and visitor experience, business and industry development, events, and arts culture and heritage. He is also a board member of Destination Phillip Island Regional Tourism and Destination Gippsland.

Bass Coast Mayor Clare Le Serve said Mr Box had impressed the recruitment committee with his passion and innovative ideas to grow the local economy.

Mr Box said he was focussed on the council delivering great service for ratepayers and ensuring Bass Coast continues to set the standard for the rest of the state.

“Council must play a critical, leading role in the region to improve the lives of all residents, but first we must ensure top class delivery of all basic services,’’ Mr Box said.

“Bass Coast has done a fantastic job in recent years in attracting more people to live and work, as well as growing our critical visitor economy. We will continue that growth through innovation and strong leadership.

“I am also passionate and driven about the essential role culture plays in our lives and Council will continue to celebrate our thriving culture that makes the region such a great place to live.”

Jodi Kennedy will continue as acting CEO until Mr Box starts his new role on January 29.

Congratulations Mr Box, hopefully you can start achieving your objectives to...."set the standard for the rest of the state"..... "improve the lives of all residents".... and...."attract more people to live and work here" by providing basic road and drainage infrastructure at Surf Beach and Sunderland Bay.

Congratulations Mr Box. I look forward to your leadership in protecting the environmental values of the Westernport Woodlands, in leadership to encourage and support the Bass Coast resident First Nations community and in practical support for the initiatives they envision to enrich this place.

Congratulations Greg it’s always good to see an internal candidate win the day.
As a relatively new ratepayer ourselves and having watched and listened to the responses given to my requests for upgraded roads and drainage it amazes me that the focus of expenditure remains with Phillip Island and or the villages of Westernport Bay - while the township and head office of the council continues to deteriorate.
I’ve been told that any upgrade to our street (just 700m from the council office isn’t expected before 2043! This is a bloody disgrace. On top of this you have the old Seconday college being vandalised and becoming a eyesore - get someone to get these matters sorted and can I suggest not a committee!
