Pool plan sunk

THE location of the proposed Phillip Island Aquatic Centre is up in the air again after councillors rejected a proposal from the aquatic working group to site it at the Cowes Activity Centre.
The group had selected the activity centre as the preferred site for the $18 million development but at Wednesday’s meeting councillors voted six to two against accepting the recommendation.

Mayor Pamela Rothfield, who left the chair so she could enter the debate, moved an alternative motion to reconsider the siting in May after councillors are briefed on the shire’s property strategy.

One of Island Ward’s other councillors, Michael Whelan, seconded the alternative motion but it was opposed by the third ward councillor, Stephen Fullarton.

The working group had consulted widely on the preferred location based on the site selection matrix in the Bass Coast Aquatic Strategy and the capacity for 213 car parks on the site.
