THIS photo was taken on the Cowes Beach, at the bottom of McKenzie Road, just before 8am on Australia Day.
The rules for this beach state that between December 1 and April 30 dogs are not allowed on the beach between 7am and 10am or between 5pm and 8pm. They are allowed on the beach at all other times provided they are on a leash.
I walk the beaches in Cowes every morning with my dogs, rain hail or shine, year round. My usual arrival time is just before 8am.
Throughout the busy holiday period, there were never more than three or four people on the beach at this time. Most were walking dogs. We know one another and share duties of picking up garbage.

What is the point of the dog restrictions? Visitors appear to be almost universally inclined to sleep in and miss the best part of the day.
There’s no way that this person is enough of a wally to use a car to drive to Ventnor and back, for the purpose of walking my dog.
One of my dogs has been attacked, on leash, at an off-leash park area at Dunsmore Street, and on the street in Thompson Avenue.
After more than 10 years, walking the beach each and every day, there has never been any problem. Most dog owners don't need rules and do the right thing.
How much longer can Bass Coast Council waste time, effort and money on a problem that doesn’t exist on the only beaches for which it is responsible in Cowes?
