IT’S all very well to expand to the north of Wonthaggi (Wonthaggi set to double
Jan 18, 2024) but what about the forgotten south?
Less than 1.5km from the Bass Coast Shire Council offices, we have unmade dirt roads, streets with no footpaths, or uneven and overgrown footpaths. Add open mosquito-filled drains that overflow when it rains. All of it unhealthy for residents.
Years ago we could speak to our ward councillor about such matters but not any more. Remember we also vote in the South.
Wonthaggi seemed to have all we felt we needed for our early retirement including
access to bridge and textiles, which were our main interests.
The library was not what we hoped but that’s been fixed now. It took a while but well worth the effort!
We started looking for a house in 1998. We wanted a north facing house, which ruled out North Wonthaggi as most blocks were east-west, so we came south.
We found a small block opposite a mine site, close to town, and near the hospital.
It had lovely views and nearby walks over the mine site. Coldon had a plan we tweaked a bit. Twenty-five years later we are still happy here.
On another matter, wouldn't it be wonderful if residents in South Wonthaggi (and the rest of Wonthaggi) could use an app to request a flexi bus instead of having a two-hour gap between services?
This is available NOW in many towns and small cities the UK. Buses run from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday and are wheelchair and walker accessible. The app is an on-demand ride shares scheme App.
Imagine being able to catch a bus into town for an appointment and not having to worry about parking fines! Or waiting ages to catch the next bus home.
Maybe our very busy councillors could find time to look at a similar scheme for Wonthaggi before the next council election.
